Regional Academia Web Course "The Birth of the Hakone Ekiden and Sports Biographies"
This lecture traces the history of the Hakone Ekiden, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2024, a century after the first Tokyo-Hakone Kanto University Ekiden Race in 1920. The lecture will examine the historical background of the birth of the Hakone Ekiden and the history of track and field sports in the Taisho period. The lecture will focus on the people involved in the early days of the Hakone Ekiden and consider the significance of the 100th anniversary race from a sports history perspective.

Shibuya served as the head judge of the Hakone Ekiden for 30 years after the war, and when he was assigned to his alma mater, Odawara Junior High School, as a teacher, he conducted a detailed on-site investigation of the Hakone Ekiden route and course. Biography:
Born in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1947, during his time at Tokyo University of Education (currently the University of Tsukuba), he participated in the Hakone Ekiden for four consecutive years, won an intercollege prize, and participated in the Fukuoka International Marathon. After completing graduate school at Tokyo University of Education, he taught at Tokai University from his first appearance in the Hakone Ekiden to a 6th place finish, then moved to Tokyo Gakugei University and engaged in education research for 35 years, while also serving as principal of Oizumi Elementary School and head of the art and sports science department. Retired after retirement.
His books include ``Elementary School Athletics'' (Fumaido), ``Long Distance, Marathon, and Ekiden'' (Seibido), ``Kaisoujutsu'' (Nippon Jitsugyo Publishing), ``Trail Running'' (Iwanami Shoten), and ``Running in Hakone.'' Born in Tokyo in 1955. Completed graduate school at the University of Tsukuba. Ph.D. (Human Sciences)
He conducts historical research on the Olympic Games from ancient times to modern times, as well as Olympic education.

Mr. Taro Obayashi

Biography:
Born in 1988 in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture. Graduated from the College of Physical Education, University of Tsukuba, and completed graduate school there (PhD: Physical Education Science). He assumed his current position in 2020 after studying abroad in Olympia, Greece, and serving as a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Special Researcher (DC2).
He has served as a representative committee member for young researchers at the International Society for the History of Physical Education and Sports (ISHPES), and as a historical researcher (sports history) for the 2019 NHK Taiga drama "Idaten: Tokyo Olympic Story." At the University of Tsukuba, he teaches lectures on the history of physical education and sports and the Olympic movement, and serves as a coach (in charge of mixed events) for the track and field club.
Mr. Akihisa Shibuya
(Professor Emeritus, University of Yamanashi Prefecture)
Biography:
Born in 1956 in Matsuda Town, Kanagawa Prefecture. Graduated from Chuo University Faculty of Law in 1980, joined Mitsubishi Bank, and completed graduate school at the University of Tsukuba in 2008. Doctor of Laws. After retiring from the bank in 2009, he became a professor at the Faculty of International Policy, Yamanashi Prefectural University. After retiring in March 2022, he will become the representative of the Regional Academia Research and Practice Organization. His specialty is civil law, but he also researches the sports history of his grandfather, Hisamitsu Shibuya. Related publications include ``How was the Hakone Ekiden course created? A study on the history of Ekiden through Hisamitsu Shibuya'' (2019).
Mr. Yukihiro Tagami

Biography:
Born in 1975. Joined Yomiuri Shimbun in 1997. After working in the Maebashi branch office, he was assigned to the editorial department's sports department in 2003. He has been involved in sports reporting for over 20 years, including his time at the Chubu branch. The 100th tournament will be my 10th time covering Hakone Ekiden.
