2025 Online Lecture: "The Role of Archaeology in Kamakura Studies"
Kamakura was the center of the eastern provinces during the Middle Ages. The ruins and artifacts unearthed during excavations are essential materials for clarifying the history of this area. We will unravel the urban landscape of medieval Kamakura based on the results of past surveys and recent research, and see what we can learn from the results that are accumulating every day.
The lecturer will be Shunichi Furuta, deacon of Jokomyoji Temple.
He is currently a part-time lecturer in the Department of Cultural Properties, Faculty of Culture, Tsurumi University, and in the Department of History and Folklore, Faculty of Global Japanese Studies, Kanagawa University.

Part 1: Kamakura Archaeology and Ruins 1
Saturday, November 1st
7pm to 8pm
What role does archaeology play in an era when many written historical documents remain? We will introduce the survey methods and examples of their use at excavation sites in Kamakura, along with famous ruins such as Eifuku-ji Temple and Kencho-ji Temple.
Part 2: Kamakura Archaeology and Ruins 2
Saturday, November 1st
8:10 PM to 9:10 PM
Following on from the first installment, we will be introducing famous ruins such as the remains of Hojo Yoshitoki's Hokkedo Hall and the Great Buddha of Kamakura.
Part 3: Kamakura Archaeology and Artifacts
Saturday, November 8th
7pm to 8pm
We will introduce aspects of the lives and beliefs of people at that time through artifacts excavated from Kamakura ruins.
Part 4: Kamakura Archaeology and Artifacts
Saturday, November 8th
8:10 PM to 9:10 PM
Excavation sites are usually not open to the public, so we will introduce how to view archaeological objects such as stone towers that remain above ground.
